Navajo Tacos are an easy buffet style meal that everyone will enjoy!

Indian Fry bread is popular in the West where we live. It originally came from the Navajo Indians, so when it is topped with additions such as beans, ground beef, and cheese, it is known as a Navajo Taco. These are easy to make with frozen bread dough, or of course you can make your own dough using my White Bread recipe, found in my cookbook p. 228. You can use canned chili for a really fast meal prep. If you have leftovers from my delicious Three-Bean Chili with Sausage (p. 49 in my cookbook)...use this to make it an extra delicious meal! (The picture shows our Three-bean chili with sausage).

If you have never tried a Navajo Taco, you've got to make this soon..!!! If you have tried a Navajo Taco...try our version. Promise it will be the best one you've ever had.   • 1/2 recipe Three-Bean Chili with Sausage (already featured on the Blog or 1 (40-ounce) can chili with beans)
  • 2 cups canola oil
  • 12 Rhodes Bake-N-Serve White Texas Rolls or 8 ounces frozen bread dough (thawed according to package directions (OR use my white bread dough recipe p.228 of The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner cookbook))
  • Toppings:
  • 3 cups shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 3 to matoes (diced)
  • 1 2.25- ounce can sliced black olives (drained)
  • 4 cups chopped iceberg or romaine lettuce
  • sour cream
  • salsa or (fresh salsa recipe p.125 in The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner cookbook)
  1. Prepare the chili, if making, and set aside.
  2. Put the toppings in separate bowls. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Line a plate with paper towels and set it next to the cooktop. Testing with a deep-fat thermometer, heat the oil in a medium skillet to 360 degrees. Remove one roll of dough at a time from the package (or divide bread dough into 12 pieces). Use your fingers to stretch the dough and the palm of your hand to flatten it. Carefully place the dough in the oil. When the dough is light brown on the underside, use tongs to turn it and fry the other side until it is light brown. Place the fried bread on the towels to drain off excess oil. Transfer to a 200-degree oven to keep warm. Fry the remaining rolls.
  4. If you are using canned chili, heat it in a saucepan or microwave.
  5. To serve, place the items in order on a buffet table or countertop-fry bread, chili, cheese, tomatoes, olives, lettuce, sour cream, and salsa- and let people serve themselves.
  6. Can be made MEATLESS: Use meatless chili. :)
